In addition to the regular academic subjects of the Montessori classroom, we also have a variety of extracurricular activities that the children can engage in. Developing hobbies adds an extra level of enjoyment to life. Club teachers have expert training in their chosen field. These include Music, Dance, Chess, Art, Kung-Fu, and Chinese language and culture. Children will follow their interests by choosing which to pursue. In this way, they can truly become passionate for the great many activities of life.
Music has a lot of benefits for children. It helps children to fine-tune their ears and enhance skills needed for education and social interaction. It helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Also, music helps strengthen memory skills. The key is the repetition of songs, which encourages the use of familiar words through memorization. In addition to the other benefits of music, it also provides us with joy.
Children are naturally active. However, dancing makes use of more of these muscles and in turn develops the use of their bodies fully. Through the process of learning movement, children become more aware of their bodies and what they are capable of. They enjoy the opportunity to express their emotions and become aware of themselves and others through creative movement. Being part of a group activity, such as learning a dance routine, promotes the importance of teamwork and develops the ability to work successfully in a group environment.
Chess is extremely helpful in brain development. It improves the learning, thinking, analytical power, and decision-making ability of the child. Chess helps the child learn how to strategize aspects of the game and life. It also helps in improving concentration and academic performance of the child. Chess promotes the understanding of the importance of being disciplined in life. In addition, children playing chess from an early age exhibit extraordinary memory skills.
Martial arts are an ancient method of training mind, body, and spirit to act as one. It helps build self-esteem and confidence in kids as well as concentration, courtesy, respect and discipline. Kung-Fu encourages kids to love team sports by doing physical, mental, and social activities.
Benefits of the arts can hardly be underestimated. It is an essential part of children development. By holding paintbrushes and learning how to control paint, crayons, scissors, and other art tools, children gain the skills necessary for later writing activities as well as a feeling of control over themselves and their world. By doing art they develop perceptual abilities. Awareness of colors, shapes, forms, lines, and textures result as children observe these and try to replicate them through art. Finally, Art helps children to learn expressing their feelings and emotions in a safe way. They learn to control their emotions and recognize that they can express and handle negative as well as joyous feelings through positive action.
Chinese language and culture
Chinese language is part of one of the world’s oldest and richest continuous cultures, over 5000 years old. It is spoken by over 1 billion people in over 6 countries. Besides economical and business advantage, learning Chinese characters has the academic and cognitive benefits. Studying Chinese stimulates different parts of the brain because Chinese is very different than English or Russian in sound, tone, and script. In addition, the practice of handwriting of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters, the visual identification of graphics, and will keep the mind sharp.
