Toddler Community: ages 12 months to 36 months

Children’s minds in early ages of life are “absorbing” everything in their environment – from language, to beauty, to the adults around them. During these important early years, it is critical for children to have the opportunity to grow and learn in a safe environment developed specifically for their education. The Toddler Community is a wonderful way to support young children in their development.

Our Curriculum:

Independence

The Toddler Community provides plenty of opportunities for children to learn hygienic personal care, such as: washing hands, brushing teeth, dressing and undressing. As children master these activities, their confidence grows because they are able to do these tasks for themselves without adult intervention. The Toddler Community also encourages children to make choices, rather than adults directing them. We believe that it is fundamental for children to learn to make decisions in a safe environment and become confident in their choices. Making mistakes is essential to this process.

Coordinated Movement

In order to develop naturally, children need a safe physical environment adapted to their size, need for free movement, and sense of adventure. In our classrooms children are never required to sit still and isolated at a table, but instead naturally gravitate toward this activity when needed. Children receive presentations in a variety of settings that involve gross and fine motor skills such as art, setting the table, dancing, and running around the garden.

Language Development

One of the most unique features of our Toddler Community is its bilingual environment in which English and Russian are constantly in use, with English being the dominant language. Teachers are native speakers. Nature has endowed children with an absorbent mind which will absorb all languages in their environment. Toddler Community will provide a linguistically rich environment and constant opportunities for the development of language. This means offering new, realistic, and exciting activities that allow the child to learn new vocabulary, hear high quality language spoken, and to practice expressing him/herself verbally.

Practical Life

Practical Life work includes activities such as spooning, pouring, folding, scrubbing, polishing, zipping, buttoning, food preparation, hand washing, table setting and more. These activities are the principle means through which the child adapts to the Toddler Community environment and gain independence. Practical Life activities draw the child’s attention to the world around him and provides a means for the child to engage with it purposefully.

Toileting Awareness

Respect is the fundamental value in any Montessori classroom. As a sign of respect toward the dignity of children, the Toddler Community strives to be a diaper-free zone. Learning to toilet without diapers is a gentle process in which the child is shown how to use the toilet frequently, clean him/herself after toileting, and change into clean clothes if accidents occur. The ability to toilet independently is a great source of pride and joy for young children.

Art & Music

Every item in the classroom has been specifically chosen for not only practicality, but also beauty and aesthetics. Art materials for coloring, painting, pasting, and cutting are made available every day. Music of famous composers and works of famous artists are also featured in the classroom. Music can also be a major tool in the acquisition of language, so we sing songs frequently.

Casa dei Bambini: From Ages 3 to 6 Years

Children between the ages of three to six years begin to increase their vocabularies, to write and read, to learn how to settle problems, to find order in the world around, and continue to absorb knowledge from the immediate environment. Space of the classroom is divided to areas of knowledge and interest. In the afternoon there are extra-curricular activities, you can learn more here.

Our Curriculum:

Sensorial

To be creative and do your best work, you need to be precise. The sensorial area allows children to practice with the concepts of length, volume, color, shape, feel, loudness, and more.

Language Development

The Casa dei Bambini maintains a bilingual environment in which English and Russian are constantly in use, with English being the dominant language. Teachers are native speakers. Children often speak in English and Russian amongst themselves, speaking more and more in the new language, as they get comfortable. The room is full of activities to enrich language, classify objects, practice speaking, and naturally take in the native examples of English and Russian. Eventually, the Montessori materials are used in the class to write, read, and study both English and Russian language.

Practical Life

Practical Life work includes activities such as spooning, pouring, folding, scrubbing, polishing, zipping, buttoning, food preparation, hand washing, table setting and more. This area of curriculum allows the child to learn to focus and concentrate his attention. These are important skills necessary for the more challenging work the child will face in later years.

Mathematics

Science, language, geography, and even art and music depend on a highly developed mathematical sense. The Montessori mathematics materials begin with concrete concepts and move toward the abstract. The curriculum can accommodate learners up to the processes of division, hierarchies, and even fraction work.

Science

At International Montessori Center at Otrada, we are surrounded by nature. We have taken advantage of this by creating doors that open onto our backyard, which is complete with a vegetable garden and many varieties of leaf, seed, tree, plant, and more to investigate. We have tools to conduct experiments and can easily observe the changing of the seasons from our cozy classroom.

Geography

Montessori education is international. The children at Montessori centers often represent many people of the world and we learn about many places and cultures in the classroom. Children construct maps and even cook food from specific countries to heighten the experience.
